New Business:
a. Cary Belyea, SwimSafe Pool Management
· It was a great summer season; very hot and very safe summer.
· Our lifeguards competed in the annual Red Cross Competition for Lifeguards and they did quite well. The competition was held at the Evendale Aquatics Center; for which the Red Cross extends its thank you to the department for hosting.
· The adult morning swim program continues to grow. Several swimmers participated in the Great Ohio River Swim event on July 23rd.
· David, Cary, and Evendale resident Jeff Carr brought Splashball to the pool this year. This introduction to water polo program was well received; and the kids who participated had a lot of fun.
· Georgia complimented the pool staff as outstanding , especially with their willingness to work with special needs kids who come to the pool.
· Stiney passed along his daughter’s compliments regarding the swim lessons.
· Plans are to fix the last of the pool leaks this fall. The company is just waiting for the weather to cooperate and the ground to firm enough that the equipment will not do much damage to the grassy areas.
· The pump room will be re-arranged during the fall; chemicals will move away from some of the equipment, mainly the pool boiler.
· The pump on the baby pool water feature will be downsized to create a more gentle water flow from that pool feature. A second water feature may be added to the baby pool.
· Cary thanked Commission, and the department, for all their help and support over the last three years; and he hopes to continue working with the village for the next three-year contract cycle.
b. Jennifer Shapiro, Lifestyle Essentials
· The Biggest Loser competition wrapped up over the summer with four winners. Each was given their choice of award.
· The Evendale 100 wrapped up over the summer with 30 of 46 participants completing the 100.
· Major Bootcamp was added at 5:05am Tuesday and Thursday mornings. This class was greatly received; however, the instructor, for this class, has left employment with Lifestyle Essentials. LE has been “auditioning” other instructors to teach the class; and is collecting all feedback from the participants. LE is hoping to continue the class with a permanent instructor.
· The original Water Fitness instructor did not work well with the patrons so she was quickly replaced with an instructor the participants liked. Several classes were cancelled because of weather, and the classes were made-up at the end of the session.
· The commission discussed concerns regarding the FitFlex Pass with Jennifer. Jennifer explained that expiration dates make for easier tracking of funds and participation. Some classes only average five participants, and this is the break-even point for LE’s costs. Stiney Vonderhaar made a motion to waive Evendale’s recovery percentage of program revenues through the end of 2011; seconded by Georgia Bergan. This motion was approved and greatly appreciated by Lifestyle Essentials.
· LE has added a board in the fitness center for patrons to sell, or share, their un-used passes. The fall fitness session started Monday, September 12th. Jennifer is looking to add a few more evening classes, such as an evening Bootcamp; second Zumba class; and any suggestions are welcomed at the fitness center desk.
· Four additional spinning bikes have been purchased; and Mary Lou Isaac has joined Lifestyle Essentials as an instructor. Mary Lou’s yoga classes can be taken using the Fitflex pass.
Old Business:
a. Lifestyle monthly report as noted in the packet.
b. Evendale Bike Master Plan update
· Stakeholders’ meeting will be held tonight in the Evendale Adult Gathering Room at 7:00pm. It will include a quick recap of Phase One of the plan; followed by a discussion of what was accomplished in Phase Two and where Evendale is headed in Phase Three.
· A focus will be placed on the area along the Mill Creek. This would be a scenic route for bicyclists, walkers, and runners; and gives hope to future connectivity to Reading, Sharonville, and beyond.
· A public input session is scheduled on Tuesday, November 15th in the Activity Room of the Recreation Center at 7:00pm.
· Grants have not been traditionally pursued by the village; but this philosophy is changing, and projects are now taken on a case-by-case basis.
Director’s Report:
· 2012 department budget was submitted to the village Chief Financial Officer.
· Gorman Heritage Farm will be completing their Five Year Master Plan by December 31, 2011. The plan will include a trail across the farm which will be maintained by the village.
· The RFPs for the fitness center management and aquatics center management will be let in October. David is reviewing the hours of supervision in the fitness center; and will adjust according to usage data.
Phi Lambda Pi Report:
· This year’s Challenge Night competitions, which welcomes new members, just wrapped up last night. After five weeks, two “old/former” members were the overall challenge winners.
· Entertainment Book sales are underway.
· Upcoming events include volunteering at Mother Son Night of Fun; a College Planning Relief Workshop; and Lunch and a Movie Event. Additionally, planning of the 2011 Haunted Trail is also underway.
· Concession and July 4th revenues were high this year; but did not exceed last year’s record totals.
· The incoming eighth grade class is equal in boys and girls.
Open Discussion:
· Pamela Meyers is amiable to another term on commission.
· Dog Day at the Pool was a success this year. The weather was chilly and wet; but the dogs did not notice, and fun was had by all.
Motion to adjourn made by Stiney Vonderhaar; seconded by Alicia Hirnikel.
Motion approved and the meeting adjourned at 8:43am.
